Since 2018, the intermediate English program has embarked on a year-long community service-learning project. Students learn to observe their community and through a variety of investigations, determine a project that could serve a particular community; school, area, or province.
Through these projects, they learn and develop many project management skills that include teamwork, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, perseverance, and patience, to name a few. Each project participant must identify, organize, complete, reflect and present their learning from the overall project. Each stage of the project integrates outcomes from Language Arts, Social Studies, or Health, but can also draw in technology, design, math, and science.
Although these students may not always appreciate the stress and challenges that arise in making these projects happen, one thing for sure, they recognize the learning that occurs.
